What is Knee Pain?

Why Am I Experiencing Knee Pain?

Knee pain can arise from various factors, including injuries, arthritis, and overuse. The specific location and nature of the pain often depend on the area and structures that have been damaged due to trauma or improper function.

Non-arthritic knee pain typically occurs around the upper, lower, or inside of the kneecap, while other conditions may lead to pain in the inner knee or along the joint line. This is where different types of pain—sharp, dull, achy, arthritic, meniscal, or ligamentous—can originate.

What causes Knee Pain?

There are many different reasons why one suffers from knee pain. If the injury is not due to trauma, it is very important to look at the stability and the functionality of the knee joint as whole. It will evaluate the knee in all stages of gait and determine whether or not the weight shift and weight bearing of the knee is the reason for the pain. Other causes include but are not limited to:

Diagnosis

At Town Physical Therapy the doctor will begin with a comprehensive functional examination which will address the onset, cause, duration, severity, vectors, establish the meaningful task and functional tasks that cause the knee pain. At this point the cause of the knee pain will be determined, however diagnostic MRI is required in severe cases.
