What is Flexion Distraction Therapy?

Flexion Distraction Therapy is a hands-on technique that uses a specialized table to gently stretch and decompress the spine. The therapy targets the lower back and neck regions, with the primary goal of relieving pressure on the spinal discs, nerves, and joints. By carefully distracting the spine and moving it into a flexed position, Flexion Distraction Therapy helps to restore the natural alignment of the spine, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.

Flexion Distraction Therapy at Town Physical Therapy

At Town Physical Therapy, we offer Flexion Distraction Therapy, a specialized treatment for individuals suffering from chronic back pain, herniated discs, sciatica, and other musculoskeletal conditions. This gentle, non-invasive therapy is designed to alleviate pain, improve mobility, and support spinal health. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or managing a long-term condition, our Flexion Distraction Therapy can help you get back to a pain-free, active lifestyle.

How is Flexion Distraction performed?

Flexion Distraction involves using a special table that distracts and flexes the spine in an automated and gentle rythmic motion. The doctor will use some manual techniques with the table to help decrease your pain. The goal is to allow the spine to move correctly in a manner that will remove pressure from the disc bulge. It does this by creating a negative pressure that pulls the disc bulge back into the spine. The flexion distraction motion also maintains healthy discs through imbibition.
Conditions that may benefit from Flexion Distraction Therapy

  • Lumbar disc injuries (ruptured, bulging or herniated “slipped disc”)
  • Low back pain
  • Mid back pain
  • Leg pain / Sciatica
  • Arthritis
  • General lower back stiffness
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Sprain / Strain
  • Scoliosis
  • Sacroiliac Syndrome
  • Spinal Stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
  • Ankylosing Apondylitis

What to Expect During a Flexion Distraction Therapy Session

Your Flexion Distraction Therapy session will begin with a thorough evaluation of your medical history and symptoms. Based on your condition, your therapist will develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs.

During the session, you will lie on a specialized table while the therapist gently adjusts your body into different positions. You may feel mild traction or stretching sensations as the table moves, but the therapy is designed to be comfortable and non-invasive. Most patients find the treatment to be relaxing, with minimal discomfort.

I have worked with several others, Jessie and Ian a few times who are also wonderful. They’re not only great at what they do, but they’re entertaining too!

Town PT is the best in town. I had the pleasure of Ian as my chiropractor. He was very tentative with my injury and made sure he did the best to get me back to 100%. He knew the right spots to massage and made sure my mobility/strength was were it was suppose to be. The staff was also great from front office to rehab techs. Front office made appointments easy to schedule and made sure to accommodate my schedule. Rehab techs were very knowledgeable with all exercises to make me feel better. Even the other staff around make sure your set up and taken care of. Very friendly and all around great facility. Will definitely recommend to anyone.
